I learned to skate when I was three and began playing hockey at four. As a first-generation Canadian and the son of immigrants, my parents valued sports and understood that hockey is a cornerstone of Canadian culture. While they could afford the cost of equipment and league fees, there was a limit to the support they could provide. Growing up, I relied on hand-me-down equipment or purchased the cheapest gear available. My parents had limited knowledge of hockey, its required skills, and the specialized training needed to play at a high level, so I never had one-on-one coaching opportunities. It became clear that while I could afford to play, those who were more well-off had access to better resources than I ever did. Additionally, most of the players around me didn't look like me, and it was difficult to relate to my peers. This is why I started Project Skate HC — to provide kids from all walks of life the chance to participate in hockey and gain access to the resources I didn’t have.
